Mackenzie Pratt is having the worst luck of his life. His apartment building is being torn down, and since he’s jobless and just weeks away from graduating college, he can’t find anywhere else he can afford to live that isn’t a critter-infested dump. As he’s lamenting the very real possibility of job hunting while couch-surfing, he gets an offer from the coworker of his best friend.
An in-demand mobile app developer and heir to his parents’ fortune, Laurent Beaudry is literally an eccentric billionaire. Even though Mackenzie realizes he’s basically living the plot of a cheesy romance novel, he takes the proffered room in Laurent’s Baltimore mansion. He finds his new housemate to be grumpy, brooding, and, at times, incredibly kind and endearing.
Raised by his brother after their father’s death, Mackenzie spent his formative years plowing headlong through school, focusing on little else beyond earning his teaching certification. He’s never taken the time to explore love and relationships, much less sexuality, so when he finds himself being courted by another man, he has no idea what to do. And when he realizes he might actually return those feelings, his life takes a whole new direction.

I was torn between parts I really liked and other parts, not so much. This review may sound really negative but it’s still a good story that I enjoyed overall. Mackenzie and Laurie/Laurent/Beau both seemed a bit incomplete as characters, Laurie more than Mackenzie, since it’s first person narrative in Mackenzie’s POV. He’s written as just too clueless, despite the explanation given for his naïveté. I couldn’t understand why he’d be so freaked out about telling anyone he was with Laurie. Questioning how to label his sexuality was understandable but I didn’t buy the issue of him teaching pre-school being his hang-up when it extended into so many other situations.Laurie’s background came out piecemeal and I guess his upbringing was supposed to have made him lack some social and relationship skills. But the “I love you” from him came waaaay too soon. They had barely spent time together and that leads to the first couple of sex scenes that I wasn’t entirely comfortable with. There was nothing kinky and there was consent but I felt as if it was uniformed consent. Mackenzie is a virgin, there’s no actual discussion between them and Laurie has him bottoming right away. Maybe that’s just me. However, the relationship and romantic development was engaging and I did get enough feels from the characters, if not as much as I’d have liked. I liked the earlier books I’ve read by the author, so I’m sure I’ll be reading the sequels I expect to come from this.

Boys Don't Cry edition by JK Hogan Romance eBooks Reviews
Mackenzie Pratt is closing in on his college graduation and he's weeks from homelessness. His cut-rate slum of an apartment building is being razed, and he doesn't have a job, or enough money, to find something else. Plus, he needs to have a stable living situation in order to find a teaching position for the fall term. While hanging out with his childhood best friend, Taylor, Mackenzie meets Laurent Baudry, a reclusive, but brilliant and wealthy, mobile app developer.
Laurent is a personal mess, and his home is a sprawling mansion with virtually no one sharing the space. Hearing about Mackenzie's predicament, he offers to let Mackenzie stay with him, in return for some light housekeeping and meal prep.
These odd-couple men are comfortable with each other from the start. Mackenzie has been alone much of his life; his dad died years ago and his brother, River, is a freelance photographer constantly on assignment. He's a natural caretaker for Laurent, who was orphaned young and has a tumultuous relationship with his uncle, his former guardian.
I liked the sweet way the love story developed. Mackenzie is so innocent, and so compassionate. He likes doting on Laurent, and he likes the perks of staying with Laurent--clean home, no pests, and a designer kitchen that was all but unused. He gets a thrill out of tempting Laurent from his marathon programming sessions using freshly prepared healthy meals. It's not long before their fledgling friendship becomes physical, but that moves at Mackenzie's pace. He's never been with anyone before, and hardly acknowledged sexual attraction before meeting Laurent. There's some confusion, but not too much hand-wringing. Laurent tries to make everything so special for Mackenzie, even being his guest for graduation. I loved that!
Expect River to turn up and put some drama on the table, but I think Mackenzie handled himself well. These two really fashion a love for one another, and that didn't bring me tears no matter what the title says.
What a perfect balance of everything I love in a romance novel! Oh the feels! The characters and the plot were spot on! I couldn’t get enough of these tow MCs ! And I can’t wait to read what’s the deal with Taylor and River! (Separately? Together? Who knows! And that’s the fun part! )
5 beautiful stars!
Just a few weeks short of graduation, Mackenzie is evicted from his apartment, so it can be torn down to make way for a new development. He doesn't have the time, or more importantly the money, to find a decent new place; not until he graduates and starts working. His best friend Taylor drags Mackenzie to a work drinks party, where one of the coworkers, Laurent, offers him a place to stay. Laurent is the your stereotypical computer nerd He has virtually no social skills, works non-stop for days on end, and is something of a snob. He's also obviously very rich, and Mackenzie doesn't have much choice. After all, it's only for a few weeks.
“Boys Don’t Cry” is not quite a “coming out” story as much as it's a “coming to terms” one. Mackenzie has largely ignored his sexual needs to get through college. He just assumed he was straight, and even when confronted by Laurent's attentions, he still doesn't want to admit it. Laurent does come on almost uncomfortably strong at times, but it makes for a more interesting dynamic between the two.
Laurent is a rather preposterous character; he is apparently rich enough that he really doesn't have to work, yet he spends unhealthy hours writing computer code. In many ways, he's not even very likable, but as his story unfolds, he become quite sympathetic, and while he may be to good to be true, you may still find him believable.
Mackenzie, our narrator, is a much more believable character. His situation is one you can easily imagine someone finding themselves in. His innocence is a bit odd, but once his story unfolds, it actually makes some sense and seems quite plausible. In fact, Mackenzie is an unusually well defined and well rounded character. He has a circle of friends, a brother, and a career he is building outside of the relationship he is developing with Laurent. It's all too common for characters in contemporary romance stories to seemingly exist in a bubble, where they have few friends, no visible means of support, and no life outside the relationship. “Boys Don’t Cry” is a pleasant and refreshing change from that meme.
